Biography
A Congolese vocalist, composer, and performer, Robinio Mundibu rose to prominence in the opening years of the 2000s through his roles in the storied Central African ensembles Quartier Latin and Wenge Musica Maison Mère, before striking out alone in 2014. Working in a propulsive Afro-pop vein dotted with house and rumba accents, he converted his regional following into worldwide recognition in 2016 via the EP Chiffre 9, issued by the French label EPM and spotlighting the singles "4 Lettres" and "Tsha Nanu Boye."
Raised in Mbuji-Mayi, Robinio Mundibu (born Mongala Akelembi dit Robinio Mundibu) prepared for work as an electrician before turning his full attention to music. He first collaborated in 2002 with Do Akongo of Quartier Latin and subsequently connected with Tutu Caludji of Wenge Musica Maison Mère, officially entering that group in 2009 and remaining for five years.
Mundibu launched his solo output in 2014 with the supple single "Vantard," modeled on the Congolese rumba manner of Do Akongo. Five further well-received singles followed over the next eighteen months, attracting the interest of EPM records and resulting in the 2016 release of his breakthrough EP Chiffre 9. He kept shaping his Afro-pop and house material, enriched by rumba, soukous, and ndombola, across later tracks such as the 2018 release "Kita Mata" and the 2019 releases "Misu Na Misu" and "Bina Na Nga."
