Magic System, an Afro-pop quartet from the Marcory district of Ivory Coast, assembled in 1996 as four longtime neighborhood friends: Asalfo, Goudé, Tino, and Manadja. Their career arc began at local parties and eventually produced one of the standout African hits of their generation. The band’s reputation for explosive live performances attracted talent scout Claude Bassolet, who helped secure the release of their debut album Papitou in 1997. Radio stations nationwide soon began spinning the hit single “Momo.” After roughly two years of limited activity, the sophomore set 1er Gaou arrived and sold 40,000 copies inside fourteen days. Listeners throughout Africa quickly adopted the group’s sound; by the moment French audiences took notice, Magic System had already surpassed one million records sold across the continent. Distribution through NextMusic then opened doors to large followings in France and the French-speaking Caribbean.

In 2001 the quartet issued Poisson d’Avril, which climbed to the top of the charts from Africa to the Antilles. Concurrently, Bob Sinclar’s remix of the earlier blockbuster “1er Gaou” saturated French airwaves and ranked as the biggest African hit in nearly fifteen years. Though Un Gaou à Paris did not repeat prior commercial peaks, the album moved briskly and earned the band bookings before vast crowds from Paris to Zambia. Their 2006 album Cessa Kié la Vérité landed on Billboard’s European Top 100. By then widely viewed as the leading ambassadors of Afro-pop, Magic System toured widely, performing in Morocco, Madagascar, the U.K., and Sweden before audiences that regularly exceeded 25,000. The 2007 release Ki Dit Mie held the summit of European world-music charts for several months. The group returned in 2011 with Toutè Kalé and followed it a year later with D’Abidjan à Paris.
