Stromae fuses thought-provoking lyrics with dancefloor-ready productions that pull from sources ranging from Jacques Brel to Cuban son, Congolese rhumba, house, and hip-hop, plus the late-'80s new beat scene of his native Belgium. Through his songs the vocalist, songwriter, and producer has tackled subjects including AIDS, cancer, and absent fathers, while using his global profile to join forces with artists such as Kanye West and Lorde. His breakthrough arrived via the 2009 single "Alors on danse," a worldwide smash that paved the way for the similarly vibrant chart-topping albums Cheese (2010) and Racine Carrée (2013). Recognized for his neat appearance and signature bow tie, Stromae treats music and fashion as intertwined artistic outlets, a stance illustrated by the Belgian Top Ten pop singles "Défiler" (2018) and "Santé" (2021); the latter track appeared on his third number-one album, Multitude (2022). In 2024 he achieved his seventh Belgian chart-topper with "Ma meilleure ennemie," a collaboration with Pomme featured on the soundtrack to Arcane League of Legends: Season 2.

Born Paul Van Haver in Brussels on March 12, 1985, Stromae grew up under the care of his Belgian mother after his Rwandan father was killed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He showed an early fascination with music, enrolling at age eleven at L'Académie Musicale de Jette to study drums. By 2005 he had turned to rap, briefly using the name Opmaestro before adopting Stromae—an anagram of "Maestro"—and forming the short-lived hip-hop group Suspicion.

Returning to solo work in 2007, he issued his debut single, "Juste un Cerveau, un Flow, un Fond et un Mic...." His true breakthrough came in 2009 while employed at a Belgian radio station, where he produced "Alors on danse" on his home setup; the station manager aired the track, listener response proved strong, and Stromae signed with PolyGram. The song reached number one in Belgium before duplicating that feat in more than a dozen other territories, among them Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, and Denmark.

As "Alors on danse" scaled European charts and Stromae's videos gained traction on YouTube, he delivered his first full-length release, Cheese, in 2010. After the album topped the Belgian chart, a major U.S. lift arrived in August when Kanye West contributed to a remix. Stromae's next effort, Racine Carrée, emerged in August 2013. Noted for its blend of African and Caribbean elements and its lyrics addressing illness, discrimination, and absentee fathers, the record quickly dominated the Belgian and French charts, holding the top spot in both countries for most of the year. It ultimately earned eight-times platinum status in Belgium and surpassed 1.5 million copies sold across Europe. That November Stromae received the Best Belgian Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

Racine Carrée's momentum carried into 2014. "Ta fête" served as the official anthem for Belgium's national football squad at the World Cup, and Stromae made his U.S. live debut in June with club dates plus an appearance on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. He also contributed "Meltdown," featuring Pusha T, Q-Tip, HAIM, and Lorde, to the Lorde-curated soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Pt. 1. Festival performances at SXSW, Coachella, and Lollapalooza, followed by an African tour, filled 2015. Over the ensuing years he issued several singles, most notably the nine-minute ballad "Défiler," which accompanied a 2018 fashion show for his Mosaert clothing line and marked his seventh Belgian Top Ten pop hit.

The 2021 preview single "Santé" led the Belgian charts and entered the Top 20 of Billboard's Hot Dance and Electronic Songs chart. Its parent album, the travel-themed Multitude, became Stromae's third consecutive number-one LP upon release in March 2022. Following a two-year absence from new music, he resurfaced late in 2024 with "Ma meilleure ennemie," a duet with French singer/songwriter Pomme that reached number one in both artists' home countries after appearing on the soundtrack for Arcane League of Legends: Season 2.
