Biography
Nekfeu first gained notice through his involvement with several French hip-hop collectives, among them S-Crew, 1995, and L'Entourage, where his lyrics addressed both political themes and intimate personal experiences. His breakthrough as a solo artist came with the 2016 release Cyborg, which topped the French charts, while the following year he made his screen debut in the feature Tout Nous Sépare alongside Catherine Deneuve.
Born Ken Samarás in La Trinité, Alpes-Maritimes, he began sharpening his skills in the Paris rap community through open-mike battles during his early teens. His initial recording appeared with S-Crew on the 2010 album Même Signature. Remaining active with that crew, he simultaneously became part of 1995, whose debut La Source surfaced in 2011, and contributed to the self-titled project issued the same year by 5 Majeur. Subsequent group efforts followed quickly: S-Crew’s Métamorphose and 1995’s La Suite both arrived in 2012, succeeded by 5 Majeur’s Variations in 2013. Additional releases that year included S-Crew’s Seine Zoo and 1995’s Paris Sud Minute, after which Nekfeu formed L’Entourage and delivered the collective’s 2014 album Jeunes Entrepreneurs.
His first solo statement, Feu, emerged on Seine Zoo Records in 2015, reaching number three in France and number five in Switzerland before earning a Victoire award as Urban Music Album of the Year. The follow-up, Cyborg, landed at the summit of the French album chart in late 2016, the same year S-Crew issued its fourth project, Destins Liés.
In 2017 Nekfeu stepped in front of the camera for Tout Nous Sépare, also known as All That Divides Us, sharing the cast with Catherine Deneuve and Diane Kruger. His third solo album, Les Étoiles Vagabondes, appeared concurrently with his directorial debut, a documentary bearing the identical title, and reclaimed the number-one position in France. Before the year ended he returned to theaters in the feature L’Échappée.
