Fabien Marsaud entered the world on July 31, 1977, in the demanding northern reaches of Paris known as Seine-Saint-Denis, later adopting the stage name Grand Corps Malade to pursue his craft as a French rapper and urban poet. A diving mishap on his twentieth birthday left him with lasting physical impairment, prompting the choice of moniker—roughly meaning “Large Sick Body”—while also necessitating the constant use of crutches that became a defining feature of his live performances. After encountering slam poetry in 2003, Marsaud started composing personal verses and participating in open readings at the Parisian venue Collectif 129H. When an acquaintance encouraged him to pair the texts with musical backing, he released his debut album MIDI 20 in early 2006, a raw set that confronted the racism, economic hardship, and social exclusion prevalent in the capital’s outskirts. The project achieved unanticipated commercial success, moving more than 300,000 units within six months and establishing Marsaud as a nationally recognized figure.

In 2008 he returned with the follow-up Enfant de la Ville, which climbed to number two on the French albums chart. The same period marked his first appearances beyond France’s borders and his efforts to bring slam poetry workshops to young residents of Seine-Saint-Denis. His third studio release, 3ème Temps, arrived in 2010 and featured a collaboration with veteran French singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour on the track “Tu es donc j’apprends.” The 2011 single “Inch’Allah” marked Grand Corps Malade’s initial entry on the French singles chart, peaking at number 59.
