Originating as 20syl's personal project, the French hip-hop collective Hocus Pocus assembled in 1995 and slowly drew notice by the close of the 1990s. Major commercial and critical recognition arrived for them in 2006 via the reissue of the 2005 album 73 Touches, as the single "Hip Hop?" that featured the Procussions pulled in listeners drawn to its combination of French, English, and acoustic/electronic components. Despite remaining distant from established acts operating in that realm, such as the Roots, the group's emphasis on a radio-friendly formula delivered strong results. They resurfaced in 2007 via Place 54, a release mixing live and studio elements that added further international collaborations along with the follow-up hit single "Vocab!" ~ Olivier Duboc
