Julien Doré emerged as a French singer-songwriter whose profile expanded dramatically upon claiming victory in the television talent contest Nouvelle Star, evolving from a figure linked primarily to that program into a self-sustaining pop artist. His debut album Ersatz arrived in 2008 with eclectic stylistic range and ranked among the year's top-selling French releases, though his artistic identity crystallized more fully on the 2016 effort &, a polished set of smooth pop threaded with electronic textures.

Doré came into the world on July 7, 1982, in Alès, Gard, France, and pursued studies at the college of Louis Feuillade along with the École des Beaux-Arts of Nîmes, where he performed alongside the group Dig Up Elvis. He approached his Nouvelle Star audition chiefly as a vehicle to promote that band, yet secured placement on season five (2006-2007) and advanced to the finale, defeating runner-up Tigane on June 13, 2007. Standout performances across the season drew from material first interpreted by artists ranging from Alizée, Claude François, and the Kinks to Britney Spears.

Triumph on Nouvelle Star delivered a major-label contract via the Jive imprint of Sony BMG. The first single issued under this arrangement was “Moi...Lolita,” a rendition of Alizée’s 2000 chart-topping hit that Doré had delivered memorably during the competition; it surged to number two on the French singles chart within its opening week of 2007 release. Ersatz marked his initial full-length solo album the following year and likewise reached number two on the French album charts. Renaud Létang (whose prior credits encompass Manu Chao, Feist, and Raphaël) and Antoine Gaillet (associated with M83, Berg Sans Nipple, and Mademoiselle K) handled production duties, and the project generated the hit singles “Les Limites” and “Figures Imposées.”

In 2010 Doré supplied music for the French dark comedy Holiday, then issued his second studio album Bichon in 2011. He also partnered on several well-received duets with Francophone artists Cœur de Pirate, Mélanie Pain, and Sylvie Vartan. His third album, 2013’s Love, attained two-times platinum certification. Greater commercial heights arrived with his fourth release: & appeared in 2016, claiming the top position in both France and Belgium while earning platinum status. Demand prompted the 2017 live document &Live, which captured performances of the material. Doré revisited selections from his catalog once more in 2018 with Vous & moi, replacing the original rhythmic pop frameworks of several signature songs with more atmospheric, acoustic treatments.
