Biography
Serving as "regens chori" at a Benedictine monastery in territory under the archbishop of Mainz, Hoffstetter saw that house dissolved in 1803 and consequently transferred to another monastery in Miltenberg am Main. His string quartets surfaced shortly before 1964, showing that the "Divertimenti a quattro" were fashioned after Haydn’s models yet without the same degree of elaboration; the resulting works nevertheless remain immediately accessible owing to their stylistic appeal. Masses and additional sacred pieces formed part of his output as well. Three viola concertos imply that Hoffstetter may himself have played the instrument.
