Rozz Williams first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the groundbreaking goth-rock outfit Christian Death. Beyond that association, he pursued a wide-ranging solo path that encompassed forays into industrial textures, cabaret arrangements, and spoken-word experiments. Born Roger Alan Painter, he assembled Christian Death while still a teenager in the 1980s; the band’s first album, Only Theatre of Pain, reached listeners in 1982 at a time when the vocalist had scarcely reached driving age. Although later Christian Death releases established the group as a leading force in the American goth movement, Williams chafed against that categorization, believing it limited his artistic range. Seeking broader outlets, he joined industrial-leaning side efforts such as Premature Ejaculation and Heltir, then launched his own career with the 1995 release Dream Home Heartache, a minimalist cabaret album made in tandem with keyboardist Gitane Demone. The follow-up, The Whorses’ Mouth, arrived in 1997 as a spoken-word recording that examined his protracted struggle with heroin addiction. On April 1, 1998, at age 34, he took his own life.
