Childhood companions Ralph Cuseglio on vocals and Jon Gonnelli on guitar longed to pursue rock sounds and launched Rye Coalition amid grunge's peak dominance. David Leto came aboard on drums and recruited his own boyhood companion Justin Morey to handle bass, creating a solid unit that gained further stability when Herb Wiley joined. Still under twenty years old, the group put out their five-song demo The Dancing Man in 1994. Local performances around their New York home base ignited strong momentum, even though the working-class outfit hailed from academically oriented families. Cuseglio and Gonnelli pursued higher education in New Jersey, prompting Wiley's own departure in 1996 for the same reason. Reduced to a quartet, Rye Coalition put forth multiple 7" EPs along with a split release alongside Karp while crisscrossing the United States. Their debut full-length Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet surfaced via Gern Blandsten in 1997, after which Morey headed west for new opportunities. Gregg Leto, David's sibling, stepped in on drums so Dave could shift to bass. Rye Coalition's intense punk edge gained traction abroad, leading to an initial European trek near the end of 1997. The Lipstick Game emerged two years afterward, coinciding with Morey's return once Gregg Leto departed for university studies. Entering the new millennium, everyday obligations mounted as Cuseglio enrolled in graduate school and the remaining members accepted teaching positions, resulting in a well-earned six-month hiatus. Rye Coalition resurfaced for a mid-2000 show alongside Shellac, Seam, Don Cab, and Uzeda, whose strong reception convinced them to treat the band as a full-time pursuit. Tiger Style signed them in 2001, bringing Wiley back to track On Top under Steve Albini. A co-headlining run with Trans Am that winter prepared the way for their third album.
