Biography
Formed around former Jawbreaker frontman Blake Schwarzenbach, drummer Chris Daly previously of Texas Is the Reason, and vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Chatelain from Handsome, Jets to Brazil merged traits from those earlier projects yet pursued a darker and more mature direction. Their debut full-length, Orange Rhyming Dictionary, arrived in 1998 and overturned expectations among contemporaries by revealing a sound that felt both novel and intensely dynamic. Further removed from those earlier associations, the musicians grew increasingly at ease with their widening range, hinting that compelling changes could still lie ahead. August 2000 brought the follow-up album Four Cornered Night. Two years afterward the trio unveiled their most somber and stirring set of songs to that point; Perfecting Loneliness surfaced on Jade Tree in October 2002 and displayed exceptionally precise ensemble playing.
