Emerging from the remnants of the Promise Ring and the Dismemberment Plan, the indie rock band Maritime originated in Washington, D.C. and Milwaukee. The group assembled in 2003 with an initial lineup of Davey von Bohlen handling vocals and guitar, Dan Didier on drums, and Eric Axelson on bass. Their sound blended sincere pop elements drawn from the sandy-toned melodies of Elephant 6 alongside classic punk hooks, leading to the release of their first album, Glass Floor, in 2004. The 2006 album We, the Vehicles became their debut on the Flameshovel label, after which Axelson exited the group. In 2007 the third album Heresy & the Hotel Choir appeared, introducing bassist Justin Klug and lead guitarist Dan Hinz as new members. Human Hearts arrived four years afterward. Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones, the band's fifth full-length release, came out in 2015 and included the single "Satellite Love."
