In 1972 the Southern rock group Sailcat scored both a chart and radio success with the track “Motorcycle Mama.” Reaching number 12 on the Billboard singles chart, the single earned the band slots on American Bandstand and a show at Carnegie Hall. Elektra issued the self-titled Sailcat album the same year, drawing on contributions from such Southern rock stalwarts as Chuck Leavell, the Memphis Horns, and Pete Carr. The band dissolved shortly after the album appeared. Frontman Johnny Wyker, previously a member of the Rubber Band that cut the first version of “Let Love Come Between Us”—later a hit for James and Bobby Purify—subsequently performed alongside Southern rock figures including Eddie Hinton, Dan Penn, and Delany Bramlett. Wyker now leads the charitable effort The Mighty Field of Vision Anthem, an organization formed to assist musicians in financial distress.
