French rap artist Salif grew up in Paris’s Boulogne Billancourt district and entered the city’s demanding hip-hop environment long before most of his contemporaries had put down their video-game controllers or piano books. By age thirteen he was already forging a personal delivery and cadence inside the crew Nysay. His distinctive style and ear for memorable hooks soon drew the attention of established figures Zoxea and Beat 2 Boul. Building on that early recognition, Nysay came under the guidance of the Lunatic collective, which placed the group on key compilations and mixtapes such as C2 La Balle and Coup de Poing. As Nysay’s profile rose, so did its standing among Paris rappers and the range of collaborations it could pursue. Through Salif’s established link with Zoxea, he gained access to French hip-hop icon Kool Shen and was invited to join the collective IV My People, sharing membership with Lord Kossity, Busta Flex, and Zoxea. His appearance on the single “Eenie Meenie Minny Mo” alongside Lord Kossity surpassed 100,000 copies sold and marked his first brush with wider recognition. Over the ensuing years Salif remained active in both IV My People and Nysay, issuing several well-received projects with each outfit; his voice can also be heard on the 2006 summer anthem “Paris Cuba” by the internationally known Cuban group Orishas. Parallel to these group efforts, Salif launched his solo career in 2007 with the album Boulogne Boy, a nod to the neighborhood where his story began.
