Biography
Sami Yusuf crafts songs that shift between opulent and personal, worldly expressions, shaped by training in Western and Middle Eastern classical traditions alongside wider influences that stretch from flamenco through Sufi music to U.K. contemporary pop. Born to Azerbaijani parents and brought up in England, he surfaced during the mid-2000s via devotional releases such as Al-Mu'allim (2005) and Without You (2009), both of which became hits across the Middle East, while also building recognition for powerful live shows. Standouts among his 2010s work included the intimate The Centre in 2014, Songs of the Way in 2015, and the SAMi EP of 2018, which surprised listeners with its fresher production approach. As his catalog thereafter leaned more heavily toward live documents, he issued titles such as When Paths Meet: Live at Holland Festival and When Paths Meet, Vol. 2 (from Paris) in the opening years of the 2020s.
Born to Azerbaijani parents in 1980, Sami Yusuf grew up in London, England, where he trained in both Western and Middle Eastern classical music from childhood onward. Already singing, playing several instruments, and speaking multiple languages by then, he later pursued composition studies at the Royal Academy and at Salford University while creating pieces that drew on Persian classical, qawwali, and flamenco styles. In 2005 he appeared on Mesut Kurtis' album Ṣalawāt issued by Muslim label Awakening Records, which also put out his own debut Al-Mu'allim as well as the follow-up My Ummah before year's end. Al-Mu'allim marked a breakthrough in the Middle East, where the title track reached number one in Egypt and Turkey and helped drive wider success for My Ummah. Yusuf contributed to the soundtrack of the film The Kite Runner in 2007, and 2009's English-language Without You adopted a stronger Western adult contemporary tone while retaining Eastern elements. He stated that the latter album appeared without his approval, after which Awakening released the concert album Sami Yusuf Live ahead of their split.
Yusuf founded the label ETM International to issue 2010's Wherever You Are, which blended contemporary singer/songwriter pop with orchestral and percussive textures alongside themes of love and tolerance. His fourth official album, 2012's Salaam, attained platinum status in Southeast Asia within months of its December release and contained tracks supporting victims of recent natural disasters. Maintaining a spiritual and compassionate focus while continuing to merge Western and Eastern modes and timbres, The Centre appeared on Andante Records in September of 2014. That same year Yusuf received the title of United Nations Global Ambassador for the World Food Programme.
Featuring lyrics drawn from poet and philosopher Seyyed Hossein Nasr, the largely English-language Songs of the Way surfaced on Andante and Dubai-based Music Box International in early 2015. His seventh album, Barakah, followed on Andante in early 2016. The same year also saw the release of concert albums documenting his performances at London's Phoenix Theatre and at the Dubai Opera.
Fresh production elements signaled a sonic change on the EP SAMi, which arrived in December of 2018. He then honored his roots with 2019's Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence, recorded during a Baku performance using solely Azerbaijani instruments apart from the piano. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted touring, Yusuf released The House Concert from his home studio in May 2020. Comprising eight original songs and four new versions of earlier material, the richly arranged live album Beyond the Stars appeared in late 2022. A further live recording, When Paths Meet: Live at the Holland Festival, emerged in early 2023. The short, six-song When Paths Meet, Vol. 2, captured live in Paris and including "Meditations on Musette by Couperin," came out in early 2024.
