Biography
Originating as the vision of Alexi Glickman, a founding member of Botticellis, Sandy's derives its name from the sandy residue the musician tracked into companions' vehicles following surfing sessions, while reshaping breezy psych-pop through open-tuned guitars. Enlisting players from Botticellis, Apollo Sunshine, and Sonny & the Sunsets, the project's first release, Fourth Dementia, surfaced in 2014. Personnel expansion and a move toward denser, more hallucinatory textures plus elevated recording fidelity marked the third album, Magic Mind, which appeared in 2021.
Glickman's earlier tenure with Botticellis, whose 2008 album Old Home Movies drew praise for its warm, intricate indie pop, preceded stints alongside Little Wings and the 2012 launch of Sandy's as a solo endeavor. The group later incorporated former Botticellis colleague Burton Li on guitar, Sonny & the Sunsets bassist Nick Aives, and Apollo Sunshine drummer Jeremy Black. Tracking commenced at Glickman's and Black's studios with additional contributions from members of Rustangs, Vetiver, and Tortured Genies, yielding Fourth Dementia, issued on Um Yeah Arts in June 2014. The EP Prom arrived the following July via Sandyams, Dingo Records, and Superfan 99 (U.K.). After Glickman and drummer Cody Rhodes captured the "Surfy Christmas" single, released in December 2017, the second album Chime showcased Glickman, Rhodes, Li (guitar, bass), David Muller (guitar, bass), and Sam Buchanan (guitar) and reached audiences on Sandyams in April 2018.
Royal Oakie Records brought the band aboard in 2020, issuing standalone tracks such as "In the Keep of Collapsing Star" and "It's Gonna Be Alright." Drawing from sources that stretched from Bach to Brian Wilson, Glickman guided Magic Mind, a concept album tracing a couple's mystical journey amid assistance and obstacles, onto Royal Oakie in June 2021. The record retained Chime's core lineup except for Buchanan while adding Aives, Dmitri Glickman, Iain Mann, Brett Garsed, and Jeremy Harris.
