Biography
Sid Sriram operates across multiple musical roles as a performer, vocalist for film scores, and creator of original material while maintaining an identity as a solo act unbound by single genres. His reputation centers on emotive vocal work for motion pictures. Having spent his formative years in California after early childhood in India, the Berklee College of Music graduate navigates Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and English film worlds with equal facility. Shortly after completing his studies he entered the industry by voicing A.R. Rahman’s “Adiye” for the 2013 Tamil release Kadal. Demand for his playback work grew rapidly thereafter, leading to repeated collaborations with Rahman across more than 200 film appearances during his initial ten years in the field, concentrated chiefly in Telugu and Tamil productions. Concurrently he issued his first independent collection, Entropy, in 2019, an art-pop album that wove contemporary R&B, indie rock, Indian Carnatic traditions, and rap elements into a single set. He took on scoring duties for the first time with the 2020 film Vaanam Kottattum. His second solo album, the English-language Sidharth, arrived via Def Jam in 2023.
Sidharth Sriram entered the world in Chennai in 1990 and relocated with his family to California while still an infant. In Fremont his mother, a Carnatic music instructor, guided his earliest lessons in the South Indian classical style beginning at age four. He simultaneously absorbed contemporary R&B alongside jazz, blues, rap, and gospel. Following his 2008 graduation from Mission San Jose High School he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study production and engineering. Each December he returned to Chennai, sustaining his technique through Carnatic recitals.
During one such visit in December 2012 a friend delivered his vocal demo to A.R. Rahman, resulting in a studio session and an invitation to sing playback for Kadal (2013). The track “Adiye” opened doors to dozens of further assignments; by the close of the decade he had contributed to more than 70 films spanning Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. After establishing himself in India’s film-music scene and settling in the country, Sriram began assembling personal recordings. Material begun as early as the start of the 2010s coalesced into Entropy, issued through Artists Originals in February 2019. The album’s fusion of R&B, Carnatic music, rap, indie, and additional strands attracted Def Jam Recordings, which offered him a contract for his next project. During this period he reached the top of the charts with songs such as “Maruvaarthai” from Enai Noki Paayum Thota. He made his compositional bow with Vaanam Kottattum in 2020, supplying five of its six songs and sharing score duties with music director K (Krishna Kumar). Sidharth, his English-language Def Jam debut, similarly synthesized his wide-ranging influences. At the moment of its release his voice had already been heard in over 200 films, cementing his stature as a leading playback artist.
