Silly Wizard stands among the premier interpreters of both age-old and modern Scottish musical traditions, and this acclaim is well-deserved. Their sound combines energetic drive with emotional sensitivity, blending power and deep feeling, sometimes casting a spell while frequently injecting wit, all supported by intricate ensemble playing and exceptional skill, especially evident in the contributions of siblings Phil Cunningham on accordion, keyboards, whistles, guitar, and vocals, and Johnny Cunningham on fiddle. The band's selections span centuries-old dance tunes for instruments alongside storytelling songs from both folk sources and newer compositions, exploring themes of happiness and sorrow, male and female experiences, journeys through eras and places, as well as romance and parting. Far from being merely one more ensemble in the folk realm, Silly Wizard belongs among the most outstanding musical innovators and executors across all nations and historical periods.

Various group participants, above all the Cunningham brothers along with singer Andy Stewart, have produced individual and paired albums while collaborating in performances and recordings alongside fellow traditional Scottish musicians. These works merit attention as well, yet the Silly Wizard material should come first. ~ Niles J. Frantz
