Biography
During a span of nine years, Wolfstone forcefully pulled Scottish music into rock territory, generating plenty of volume and resistance along the way. The group adopted the grunge approach from Seattle and transplanted it to the Highlands, where it shaped both traditional pieces and their own compositions. The process started after fiddler Duncan Chisholm assembled a ceilidh band for local Highland dances and incorporated pipes along with bass and drums, a blend that audiences embraced. Retaining original bassist David Foster, Chisholm added Stuart Eaglesham on guitars, Struan Eaglesham on keyboards, and guitarist/songwriter Ivan Drever to complete the ensemble.
Their 1991 debut Unleashed became the top-selling release ever for the small Iona Records label and earned the band a silver disc. Two earlier collections, Wolfstone I and Wolfstone II, later gained circulation once the group achieved recognition, yet the members distanced themselves from material captured during early development. The following year brought The Chase, which carried their refined sound abroad through a tighter combination of fiery instrumentals anchored by the heavy rhythm section and Drever’s tracks such as “The Prophet” and “Tinnie Run.” The band toured Europe and made an initial trip to America, returning several times in subsequent years. The video Wolfstone: Captured Alive Video documents the intensity of those performances, which lacked subtlety yet reached broad audiences.
Two American releases appeared in 1994: the self-titled Wolfstone and the substantial Year of the Dog, which delivered strong drive on numbers like “The Sea King.” Bassist Wayne MacKenzie and piper Steve Saint joined at this stage, pushing the ensemble further toward rock, while producer Phil Cunningham emphasized loud, distorted guitars. Two years later The Half Tail arrived with a fuller, more polished production that featured the standout track “Bonnie Ship the Diamond,” placing a fresh imprint on Scots music. Difficulties with the label and management disputes caused the configuration to fracture a year afterward, though the story did not conclude there. Drever and Chisholm continued collaborating, resulting in This Strange Place in 1998 and Seven in 1999, the former reportedly issued to fulfill contractual terms, after a best-of collection. Occasional performances have occurred since, without a full reunion.
