Biography
Runrig originated in Scotland during 1973 when Rory MacDonald, Calum MacDonald, and Blair Douglas assembled the act as a trio. Donnie Munro came aboard the next year. Blair Douglas left and Robert MacDonald took his place, only to die of cancer in 1986. Further membership adjustments produced a settled configuration of the MacDonalds, Munro, Peter Wishart, Iain Bayne, and Malcolm Jones before Canadian singer Bruce Guthro succeeded Munro in 1999. The band renders traditional Scottish folk music through an anthemic rock approach and is recognized for its pride in heritage along with spirited energy. More than a dozen studio albums have appeared, among them Play Gaelic (1978), Heartland (1985), The Cutter and the Clan (1987), Amazing Things (1993), The Stamping Ground (2001), and Everything You See (2007). Although the group commands widespread popularity in Britain, it functions chiefly as a cult act in America, drawing devotees mainly from Celtic and folk circles.
