Biography
Matheson, a Scottish folk vocalist celebrated for her gentle timbre and versatile range, gained prominence as the lead singer of the Celtic ensemble Capercaillie. Her seamless transitions between English and Gaelic distinguished her within folk circles, prompting the start of her solo endeavors in the late 1990s via the album The Dreaming Sea. Appearances alongside the Canadian folk-rock outfit Spirit of the West, along with a role in the motion picture Rob Roy, broadened her reach, leading to later works including Downriver in 2005 and Urram in 2015. Whether performing independently or alongside Capercaillie, she has consistently blended traditional tunes with contemporary electronic and rock elements. Her fifth solo effort, Still Time, arrived in 2021.
Raised in the modest community of Taynuilt within Argyll, she took up singing early on, absorbing Gaelic customs from her mother and grandmother. During her formative years, performances in village halls across Western Scotland preceded the formation of Capercaillie alongside schoolmates in the mid-1980s. Following initial Celtic recordings rooted in tradition, the band incorporated progressive worldbeat influences, a method Matheson extended to her own projects commencing with The Dreaming Sea in 1996. Her calming delivery and fluency in Gaelic positioned her among Scotland's foremost traditional vocalists, as she devoted much of the 2000s to advancing her solo path through Time to Fall (2002) and Downriver (2005) while continuing with Capercaillie. Recognition came in the form of OBE honors around the decade's midpoint. Collaborating with spouse and bandmate Donald Shaw on these projects, she contributed to two additional Capercaillie albums prior to issuing Urram in 2015, which explored her familial connections to the Hebridean islands. The release of the reflective Still Time followed after six years in 2021.
