Biography
Originating from Detroit, Sir Mack Rice launched his career as a vocalist and composer in the R&B and soul world during the closing years of the 1950s. His first group affiliation came in 1956 with the vocal ensemble 5 Scalders, after which he sang with the Falcons between 1957 and 1963. He subsequently served as road manager for the later iteration of the Falcons before stepping forward as a solo artist. Among the many pieces he composed, “Mustang Sally” stands as the best known; the song has been covered by numerous performers, among them Wilson Pickett and the Young Rascals. Rice’s own recording climbed to number 15 on the R&B charts in 1965, marking the sole chart success he achieved under his own name.
