Sivert Høyem ranks among Norway’s most lasting musical figures, chiefly recognized for having fronted the rock outfit Madrugada and for his parallel work as a solo performer and narrative songwriter whose singular timbre blends qualities associated with Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and Neil Diamond. Born in 1976, he spent his early years in the modest village of Kleiva near Sortland in northern Norway before relocating to Oslo to study history and develop his musical ambitions, where he connected with his future Madrugada colleagues in 1993. The group secured a deal with Virgin Music Norway in 1998 and delivered its first album, Industrial Silence, the following year. Spellemann Award recipients—Norway’s equivalent of the Grammy—Madrugada issued five studio albums, one live set, and a retrospective collection before ceasing activity in 2008 upon the death of founding guitarist Robert Burås. Høyem had nevertheless initiated his solo path several years earlier; his debut album, Ladies & Gentlemen of the Opposition, surfaced in 2004, followed by the one-time release Exiles, recorded with his side project the Volunteers, in 2006. Once Madrugada disbanded, he produced three albums that reached the summit of the charts: Moon Landing in 2009, the double-platinum Long Slow Distance in 2011, and Endless Love in 2014. In 2015 his Wild West-inflected single “Black & Gold” was chosen as the theme for the Norwegian television success Okkupert. The next year he issued his sixth solo album, Lioness, a measured and nocturnal work that scaled back its rock drive while heightening the atmospheric textures surrounding his smoky delivery.
