The Norwegian sextet Kaizers Orchestra crafts emotionally intense rock compositions steeped in the mournful strains of Tin Pan Alley alongside Eastern European folk traditions. Originating in Bergen during the closing years of the 1990s, the group features Jan Ove Ottesen and Geir Zahl handling vocals, guitar, and oil barrel, Helge Risa on pump organ, Øyvind Storesund managing both accordion and bass, Terge Vinterstøen covering guitar and percussion duties, and Rune Solheim behind the drums. That distinctive approach secured a contract with the Scandinavian imprint Broiler Farm, which issued the 2001 album Ompa Til du Dør; the release captured the Norwegian Grammy and stands as the top-selling rock debut ever produced in Norwegian. Evig Pint appeared two years later, earning additional honors while surpassing the commercial performance of the preceding record. An international agreement with Universal Germany paved the way for 2005’s Maestro, a characteristically wide-ranging effort distinguished by elevated production standards compared with the band’s earlier output. The thematically consistent Maskineri followed in 2008, succeeded the next year by Våre Demoner (Our Demons), a set of newly tracked renditions drawn from previously unheard songs. In 2010 the ensemble revealed intentions to launch a conceptual trilogy titled Violeta Violeta, whose opening chapter reached listeners on January 31, 2011, with the remaining two volumes surfacing throughout 2012. One year later the musicians declared their intention to disband upon completion of the 2013 tour.
