Biography
Norwegian singer-songwriter Ane Brun, recognized for her lilting vocals, theatrical arrangements, and delicate indie folk craft, has established herself as a chart-topping adult pop artist across Scandinavia. Spending Time with Morgan served as her international full-length debut in 2003, paving the way for A Temporary Dive the next year to secure her first number one position in Norway. Multiple chart entries in both Norway and Sweden followed over subsequent years, with Changing of the Seasons in 2008 and It All Starts with One in 2011 each returning her to the top spot in her home country as her sixth studio album. Leave Me Breathless, her eighth LP, entered the Top Three through reworkings that spanned Radiohead and Mariah Carey. Portrayals marked her twelfth release in 2023, another covers collection that applied her distinctive delicate touch to material by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Rodgers & Hart, among others.
Until her European debut via Spending Time with Morgan in 2003, Brun stayed largely a regional figure. The album appeared on DetErMine, the label she co-founded the prior year alongside Tiny's Ellekari Larsson, and earned local acclaim for its cinematic sound before receiving recognition at the Swedish Independent Music Awards. The following year brought both the EP My Lover Will Go and the romantic songbook A Temporary Dive, the latter a chart-topping effort that included collaborations with singer-songwriters Ron Sexsmith, Teitur, and Syd Matters while its sonic palette recalled early Neko Case and Nick Drake. Platinum certification arrived in Norway within three weeks of release, accompanied by honors such as the Norwegian Spellemannsprisen, the nation's equivalent to the Grammy, for Best Female Artist and Hit of the Year in 2005. Duets closed the year, pairing her with ten different songwriters. A remixed and remastered edition of A Temporary Dive reached American audiences through the V2 label in May 2006.
Live in Scandinavia, her first live album, came next as Brun prepared a fresh studio project. Changing of the Seasons, issued in 2008, explored shifting climates and evolving relationships, while Sketches from the same year gathered her home recordings into a curated set of demos. The former became her second Norwegian number one and peaked at number two in Sweden. Peter Gabriel's New Blood featured her in 2011, the same year she released her sixth album, It All Starts with One, under producer Tobias Fröberg, which topped charts in both Norway and Sweden.
Marking a decade in music during 2013, Brun assembled the 32-track compilation Songs 2003-2013 together with a set of rarities and covers. Her subsequent studio effort applied her singular style to an eclectic array of covers stretching from Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" to Nick Cave's "Into My Arms." Leave Me Breathless emerged in October 2017 and reached the Top Five. Two long-players arrived in late 2020: originally planned as a double album, the companion releases After the Great Storm and How Beauty Holds the Hand of Sorrow addressed frustration, grief, and further human struggles. A featured appearance on Siv Jakobsen's acoustic duet "Sun, Moon, Stars" preceded the March 2023 arrival of Portrayals, which incorporated reworkings of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Emmylou Harris, and others alongside a version of Beyoncé's "Halo" with Linnea Olsson.
