Sjava rose to prominence among South Africa's leading acts in the latter half of the 2010s by fusing hip-hop, R&B, and African pop elements. Working almost exclusively in Zulu, the vocalist and rapper crafts deeply felt material on personal bonds and household concerns, revealing the natural overlap between modern R&B, trap, and longstanding Zulu traditions. His breakthrough arrived with the gold-certified 2016 debut Isina Muva on Ambitiouz Entertainment, after which international exposure followed via a contribution to the 2018 Black Panther soundtrack.

Born Jabulani Hadebe in the modest town of Bergville, he later moved to Johannesburg and initially built a career in acting through multiple local soap operas while also composing for various television shows that spanned dramatic series and dance-oriented programs. Only after turning thirty did he launch his recording career under the name Sjava, first gaining notice by supplying the chorus on Miss Pru's 2016 single "Ameni." The ensuing album Isina Muva, whose title translates as "late bloomer," earned gold status at home and captured the Best Produced Album prize at the South African Music Awards. Kendrick Lamar's discovery of the music led to Sjava's appearance on the soundtrack track "Seasons," which broadened his global audience. Release of the Umphako EP preceded his receipt of the Viewers' Choice honor for Best International Act at the 2018 BET Awards.
