In the 1990s rap landscape, Skee-Lo stood apart for crafting profanity-free tracks filled with lighthearted tales and a wry, self-mocking wit. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he relocated to Riverside, California, at the age of nine. Kurtis Blow’s records first drew him to rap, their straightforward and relatable tone leaving a lasting impression. The single “I Wish,” whose video spoofed Forrest Gump, dominated radio and MTV airwaves by mid-1995, prompting the swift arrival of his matching debut album. He reemerged in 2001 to deliver the long-delayed sequel I Can't Stop, then waited another decade for Fresh Ideas to surface in 2012. “Slow Down” became his next release in 2024.
