Matt Mehlan, an idiosyncratic pop songwriter with a pronounced reliance on electronics, first shaped Skeletons as a low-profile endeavor in Oberlin, Ohio. There the project issued two early albums, I'm at the Top of the World and Life and the After Birth, on the Shinkoyo label that Mehlan co-founded. Carson Garhart, Severiano Martinez, Jason McMahon, and Johnny Misheff later joined the lineup. Credited to Skeletons & the Girl-Faced Boys, Git appeared in June 2005 via a joint release between Shinkoyo and Ghostly International. Spring 2007 brought Lucas, a work drawing inspiration from the Garden of Eden and the rural Midwest. Tomlab then issued the free jazz-influenced Money in fall 2008.
