Emerging during the mid-1990s, Slavek Hanzlik established himself as a notable contemporary bluegrass and instrumental artist. Born and raised in Prague, Czechoslovakia, he remained in that city until 1982, at which point he became a political refugee and relocated to Canada, where he held citizenship for more than ten years. His American debut, Spring in the Old Country, appeared on Flying Fish in 1991. Relocating to the US by the middle of the decade, he settled in Chicago. He joined the Hollywood subsidiary Sierra in 1995 and issued Summer Solstice, which earned favorable notices within contemporary instrumental and progressive bluegrass communities while achieving modest success as a New Age release. Two years afterward came Fall of My Dreams.
