Biography
Sleep Whale came together in Denton, the college town in northern Texas, where the band fused the hypnotic pulse of Krautrock pioneers Can and Neu! with the experimental sensibilities of avant-garde figures Steve Reich and Brian Eno, crafting a distinctive style that quickly drew an enthusiastic following. Established in 2006 by core members Joel North on guitar and cello and Bruce Blay handling percussion, samples, guitar, bass, and additional instruments, the ensemble issued its debut EP, Little Brite, in 2009. The full-length album Houseboat followed later that year. To expand their sonic palette, Sleep Whale enlarged the lineup with Paul North on vocals and guitar plus Spencer Stephenson on drums, enabling the group to deliver its singular sound completely in both recorded and live settings.
