Markland Starkie, previously a member of Kaito, pursues Sleeping States as his eclectic and folky solo outlet. The project generally favors a sparse, meditative style reminiscent of Final Fantasy and Little Wings, yet it occasionally incorporates skittery electro-pop and lush indie pop textures, marking a quiet departure from Starkie’s earlier noise-pop roots. The first Sleeping States album, Distances Are Great, appeared in 2004. During the following three years Starkie issued albums, EPs, and singles at a prolific rate, yielding 2005’s A Year in the Life of Sleeping States, the self-titled Sleeping States cassette EP also from 2005, the 2006 split EP with Francois, and the 2007 full-length There Are the Open Spaces, together with numerous split singles and compilation tracks.
