Alternative country-rock outfit Slobberbone featured vocalist and guitarist Brent Best alongside lead guitarist Jess Barr, bassist Brian Lane, and drummer Tony Harper. The quartet came together in Denton, Texas, during the opening months of 1992 and treated their performances with the same casual intent that inspired the band’s name, drawn from a canine chew toy, as they played primarily to secure complimentary drinks. Their debut concert actually took place inside a local liquor store. In 1995 the group issued its own LP, Crow Pot Pie, which drew the notice of Doolittle Records founder Jeff Cole and prompted a quick contract. Two years afterward they delivered the follow-up Barrel Chested. Three years after that, Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today appeared on the New West label. Once they began working with producer Don Smith, the musicians tracked Slippage during the spring of 2002 ahead of its summer release. Slobberbone concluded its run with a final performance in Denton during 2004, after which Best, Barr, and Harper formed the Drams. Jess Barr passed away on December 6, 2022, at age 46 while receiving care for a heart condition.
