Upon the arrival of their first long-player, critics quickly dubbed the pair successors to the White Stripes, yet Slow Club wove strands of folk, twee, and ’60s pop into a brighter, gentler palette that stood apart from the Detroit duo’s raw garage attack. Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor launched the project in 2006 once the Sheffield outfit Lonely Hearts had split, with Watson taking guitar and Taylor settling behind the drums. The pair soon logged shows at nearby clubs in the company of Tiny Dancers and later served as openers for Tilly and the Wall, an association that drew the notice of the latter group’s European imprint, Moshi Moshi. Slow Club joined that roster and delivered the debut album Yeah So in 2009, followed by its American issue at the start of 2010. Their sophomore effort, Paradise, surfaced in 2011 and revealed a noticeably broader sonic reach. For the third collection the duo recruited Colin Elliot—Richard Hawley’s longtime co-producer—to shape the lushly nostalgic and romantic Complete Surrender, which appeared in July 2014. The next year they issued the covers set I Swam Out to Greet You, featuring takes on material by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Future Islands. In 2016 the band returned with its fourth studio album, One Day All of This Won’t Matter Anymore, enlisting producer Matthew E. White along with his regular studio ensemble to realize the recording.
