Snakefarm's distinctive fusion of folk, funk, blues, and trip-hop emerged unexpectedly during the summer of 1995 at the intersection of Houston and Crosby Streets in New York City. Anna Domino received that spontaneous creative impulse, after which the project's story unfolded and continues to develop. Her early years involved frequent relocations from Tokyo through Michigan, Italy, and Canada, fostering an ability to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings before she eventually settled in Brussels, Belgium. There she began her solo work on the Les Disques du Crepuscule label, issuing four albums and two EPs from 1984 to 1990 that earned widespread critical acclaim for their art-pop approach. Guitarist Michel Delory entered her band in 1986 and later became both her husband and ongoing musical collaborator. A 1996 compilation titled Favorite Songs from the Twilight Years collected earlier Domino material and sustained listener interest while she and Delory prepared their subsequent venture under the Snakefarm name. Having grown up listening to Leadbelly, Odetta, and Mahalia Jackson and already recognized for her unconventional musical instincts, Domino naturally gravitated toward reinterpreting classic American folk songs. Delory contributed experimental production techniques along with proficiency on multiple instruments. The duo's first Snakefarm album, Songs From My Funeral, appeared in 1999 on Kneeling Elephant Records and drew strong critical responses.
