An alto saxophonist of solid but limited stature, Sonny Red found himself overshadowed during the 1960s and 1970s. His early career included a stint alongside Barry Harris in Detroit from 1949 through 1952, followed by a brief period in 1954 playing tenor saxophone in Frank Rosolino’s group before a short association with Art Blakey. Upon moving to New York in 1957, he achieved modest visibility through collaborations with Curtis Fuller and Paul Quinichette, along with leading his own sessions on Savoy, Blue Note, and especially Jazzland between 1958 and 1962. Although he continued to freelance and appear on recordings with musicians such as Clifford Jordan, Pony Poindexter, Donald Byrd, Kenny Dorham, and Yusef Lateef throughout the 1960s, Red had faded into obscurity by the following decade.
