Rock chronicles occasionally note the Sopwith Camel among the earliest San Francisco groups from the psychedelic period to sign with a major record company. Their distinction actually lies in achieving the initial Top 40 success from that scene via the vaudevillian number "Hello, Hello," which climbed the charts in early 1967. Yet the ensemble never ranked among the premier acts from the Bay Area, lacking both quality and psychedelic elements in their music. Their sound typically evoked an inferior version of the Lovin' Spoonful, a connection strengthened by their shared producer Erik Jacobsen, as they pursued the less appealing theatrical sides of that band's style through lethargic, cheerful pop-folk arrangements. Shifts in lineup postponed the finish of their debut LP for almost twelve months following the success of their single. By the time it appeared, the material already felt antiquated, as though better suited to an earlier release date. After transitioning to Warner Bros., the band issued The Miraculous Hump Returns from the Moon in 1972. These efforts represented the Sopwith Camel's sole long-playing releases before the group permanently disbanded in 1974.
