Inspired by the 1990s CD compilations Die Schlümpfe, which recast current chart material as dance tracks voiced by the cartoon Smurfs, the SpongeBob Schwammkopf series adapts well-known songs with freshly written German lyrics performed by Santiago Ziesmer, the actor who supplies the German voice for the title character of the Nickelodeon series SpongeBob SquarePants. The first volume, BOBmusik: Das Gelbe Album, appeared in 2011 and contained the tracks “Lecker Lecker” (a reworking of Shakira’s “Waka Waka”), “Hummer” (based on Culcha Candela’s “Hamma!”), and “Zack Zack” (derived from Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”). Later the same year the collection was reissued as BOBmusik: Das Gelbe Winteralbum with two additional songs: “Schnee in Bikini Bottom,” drawn from LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” and “Frohes Fest,” taken from P!nk’s “Raise Your Glass.” In 2012 the follow-up SpongeBob Schwammkopf: Das Blaue Album presented further adaptations, among them “Au!” (from Hurts’ “Stay”), “Ich Find’s Trocken Toll” (from Britney Spears’ “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll”), and “Ich Bin RoboBob” (from Die Atzen’s “Strobo Pop”). SpongeBob Schwammkopf maintained the series’ momentum in 2013 by issuing both a new set of recordings, BOB Star: Das Total Abgedrehte Album, and a retrospective compilation, Bob Hits: Das Allerbeste Album.
