The beloved international character Caillou, drawn from both animation and literature, sprang from the creative partnership between author Christine L'Heureux and artist Helene Desputeaux. Child development specialists shaped the early Caillou books, which reached print in 1987 for an audience of two- to six-year-olds. French-speaking children first met the figure—whose name means “pebble” or “bald-headed” in French—on the page, yet television exposure arrived soon afterward. Canadian viewers encountered the series on Teletoon beginning in 1997, with PBS introducing it to U.S. audiences two years later. Short animated segments, original songs, and live-action puppet interludes combined to sustain the interest of its youngest fans, prompting swift growth of an accompanying musical catalog. Once assembled onto CD, these collections met with immediate enthusiasm; English-speaking listeners in particular welcomed the 2003 release Caillou's Favorite Songs. Worldwide popularity of the program generated calls for translated editions, leading Universal to issue Weihnachten mit Caillou and Las Canciones de Caillou in 2007 for the character’s vast global audience.
