Biography
One of the most pervasive phenomena to overtake children's programming in the wake of Barney, Teletubbies originated with producers Anne Wood and Andy Davenport before making their first appearance on BBC television on March 30, 1997. The four brightly hued figures Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po were devised specifically to address the physical, social, and cognitive requirements of infants and toddlers, yet the program's dreamlike tone, vivid visuals, and mesmerizing rhythm also drew an unlikely audience of intoxicated twentysomethings. Quickly becoming a phenomenon throughout Britain, the series likewise dominated ratings upon reaching American screens, though Tinky Winky sparked widespread debate in 1999 after Christian leader Jerry Falwell asserted that the character was covertly gay. The observation was not intended as humor. Even amid the resulting uproar, the Teletubbies commercial apparatus continued at full throttle, generating not only standard merchandise and clothing but also several officially sanctioned albums, including the 1999 releases Say Eh-Oh and Nursery Rhymes and Other Fun Songs! Bedtime and Playtime Stories followed in 2000. The property returned in 2014 when British broadcasters commissioned 60 fresh episodes. One year afterward, viewers met the Tiddlytubbies, a group of eight infant characters named Daa-Daa, Umby Pumby, Baa, Ping, Mi-Mi, Ruru, Nin, and Duggle Dee. Big Hugs arrived in 2017 as a 19-track assortment presenting both original material and familiar tunes reinterpreted in the Teletubbies style.
