Deriving their moniker from a fragment of Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"—specifically the lines "You were caught on the crossfire/Of childhood and stardom/Blown on the steel breeze"—the six-piece group Steel Breeze from California quickly gained favor among early MTV audiences. Their fusion of classic guitar-driven power pop and contemporary new wave synthesizer elements propelled the 1982 self-titled album to prominence, largely thanks to the video for "You Don't Want Me Anymore" on the emerging network. Although the track stopped short of the top ten at position sixteen, it enjoyed a five-month run on the charts. The follow-up "Dreamin' Is Easy" also reached the top forty, establishing the group beyond one-hit wonder territory, even if the song lingers only in the minds of dedicated enthusiasts. In 1983 they issued Heart on the Line, which garnered little attention despite saxophone contributions from Clarence Clemons on a single cut. By the nineties and continuing into the next decade, Steel Breeze performed as a cover act in West Coast venues. Vocalist Kevin Chalfont later joined the Storm, providing vocals for their 1991 top forty hit "I've Got a Lot to Learn About Love."
