An eclectic blend of demented surf, Indian and Asian improvisation, free-form noise, fractured folk, and countless other styles has long defined the output of the fiercely independent Sun City Girls, an avant-everything experimental trio whose approach incorporates elements of kabuki theater, shadow puppetry, and maverick guerilla stagecraft. Their guiding principle has always centered on pushing boundaries while staying remarkably inclusive, a stance that produced a dizzying succession of vinyl, cassette, and CD releases across two decades. The group formed in Phoenix, AZ, and first appeared under the Sun City Girls name in 1981; after a brief transformation into Paris 1942 alongside former Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker, the lineup solidified in 1982 as the trio of brothers Alan Bishop and Richard Bishop with percussionist Charles Gocher.

Their debut album, Sun City Girls, arrived in 1984 via Placebo Records, and the band has since issued nearly 30 official albums plus innumerable limited-edition vinyl, cassette, and CD-R projects, rendering any complete documentation of their discography nearly unattainable. Remaining a challenging, unpredictable, and eclectic musical unit throughout its existence, Sun City Girls operated beyond the commercially driven goals of the mainstream recording industry and served as a guiding light for independent musicians and artists worldwide. After moving to Seattle in the early '90s, the trio launched Abduction Records as its own label and created the archival imprint Sublime Frequencies.

The band stopped performing together following the 2007 death of Charles Gocher, although Alan and Richard Bishop have continued to record both individually and collaboratively under various names.
