Supernatural first gained widespread recognition for his exceptional abilities in improvisation, appearing prominently in the 2000 documentary Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme. Prior to his high-profile 1997 clash with Juice Crew member Craig G, which delivered the most significant setback of his career to date, he had already put out multiple singles. Although a subsequent rematch ended in victory for Supernatural, the earlier defeat left a modest stain on his previously unblemished reputation.

A 2003 collection titled The Lost Freestyle Files gathered together earlier recordings, while two years afterward he issued S.P.I.T. (Spiritual Poetry Ignites Thought), his debut full-length project composed entirely of written material rather than improvised verses. Maintaining his technique through regular study of both conventional lexicons and rhyming dictionaries, Supernatural sought to surpass the existing mark for continuous freestyling at the 2006 Rock the Bells festival. Canadian rapper D.O. had set that benchmark at eight hours and forty-five minutes; Supernatural extended the duration to nine hours and ten minutes, reinforcing his standing among the foremost practitioners of the form.
