Award-winning Canadian singer Susan Aglukark entered into a worldwide recording agreement with EMI Music Canada in 1993. Her output quickly gained traction across Canadian radio and television outlets. The year 1995 brought her sixth album overall and third under the EMI banner, This Child, which reached stores and earned double-platinum status.

Born in Churchill, Manitoba, Aglukark grew up in a large family as the daughter of a minister whose postings shifted the household from one small community to another. Despite the constant movement, her upbringing remained conventional: after completing school she took a position as a linguist with the Canadian Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. Amid that routine employment, her passion for music persisted, sustained by a series of modest performances that she hoped would eventually lead to greater recognition.

In 1990 she took an independent step by issuing her first single, “Searching.” Three full-length projects followed—Dreams for You, Christmas, and Arctic Rose. The 1993 EMI contract led to the release of several singles, among them “Song of the Land,” “Still Running,” “Suffer in Silence,” and “Breakin’ Down.” The label also reissued Arctic Rose and Christmas. In 1995 she delivered the new album This Child; the following year she welcomed her first child. Balancing motherhood, marriage, recording, and touring, Aglukark continues to devote time to organizations such as the Aboriginal Division of the National Alcohol and Drug Prevention Program.
