Biography
Hailing from Hobbema, Alberta, Canada, the Cree performer Shane Yellowbird set his sights on a cowboy career until a stuttering condition unexpectedly opened the door to his becoming one of the nation’s youngest leading country singer-songwriters. Immersed from childhood in Canadian rodeo traditions, he mastered riding and roping while regularly competing in and attending such events. Therapy for the speech impediment shifted his trajectory when instructors urged him to sing rather than speak his sentences, steering his talents away from the plains and into vocal contests that he consistently claimed. Management firm O'Reilly International soon discovered him, securing a recording contract that yielded the November 2006 debut Life Is Calling My Name. The project proved successful, generating several singles and earning Yellowbird the Aboriginal Entertainer of the Year Award at the 2007 Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards. His 2007 single “Pickup Truck” climbed to the Top Five, and a 2008 Juno Award nomination followed for outstanding achievement in Canadian country music. Shane Yellowbird died on April 25, 2022, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, at age 42.
