Canadian country singer and songwriter Dean Brody spent his early years near the Canadian Rockies in Jaffray, British Columbia, where a rural upbringing involved hunting, fishing, chopping firewood, competing in sports, and taking part in the local 4-H club. Even then he picked up the guitar, composed original material, and decided music would be his future. At sixteen, however, he followed the path of most young men in the area by taking a job at the sawmill, an experience that sharpened his resolve to chase a recording career. In 2004 he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, with little more than hope on his side. A publishing agreement eventually materialized, allowing him to concentrate on writing, yet the arrangement ended after two years and his American work visa was not renewed, sending him back to Canada convinced his musical ambitions had collapsed. Shortly before he could fully readjust, word arrived that Keith Stegall, then affiliated with Broken Bow Records, wished to offer him a recording contract. Brody headed once more to Nashville and teamed with longtime friend and producer Matt Rovey to shape his self-titled debut album, issued by Broken Bow in 2009. The lead single “Brothers” quickly earned enough airplay to reach the middle ranks of the charts in both Canada and the United States that year.
