Biography
Jason Blaine stands among Canada’s foremost country acts, an award-winning performer whose style merges classic country textures and rustic subject matter with fresh, rock-driven energy. Born Jason McEwen on April 19, 1980, in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada, he absorbed country music early through his father and older brother, both of whom played in a hobby band. At age eight McEwen picked up the guitar; by sixteen he was writing songs and soon performed alongside his father and brother. After high school he enrolled in business studies at Algonquin College in Pembroke yet continued pursuing music, serving as guitarist and backing vocalist for singer John Landry. In 2002 he entered Project Discovery, the nationwide talent competition backed by CMT Canada, claimed first place, and chose the stage name Jason Blaine to distinguish himself from fellow winner Jason McCoy.
His debut single, “That’s What I Do,” appeared in 2003, followed in 2005 by the independent album While We Were Waiting on Jay Bird. Icon Records, under Universal distribution, reissued that debut in 2006; Koch Entertainment then signed him for the 2008 follow-up Make My Move, which yielded the modest Canadian hits “Rock in My Boot” and “Good Day to Get Gone.” By release time Blaine had relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to broaden his reach. He secured a publishing agreement with Anchor Down/New Millennium Music and a recording contract with eOne Records, resulting in the 2010 album Sweet Sundown and the 2011 set Life So Far; the latter contained “They Don’t Make ’Em Like That Anymore,” named Single of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association.
Everything I Love, issued in 2013, cemented Blaine’s stature as a major Canadian country artist, with three singles—“Rock It Country Girl,” “Feels Like That,” and “Friends of Mine”—all reaching the Top 20 on the Canadian Country Singles chart. In 2014 he signed a publishing deal with Word Country, the country division of Word Music Publishing. The 2015 release Country Side proved another domestic triumph, generating the hits “Dance with My Daughter,” “Spotlight,” and the title track, which SOCAN recognized as 2015’s Most-Played Canadian Country Song of the Year; the same organization later named Blaine’s work Airplay Single of the Year in Canada for 2014, 2015, and 2016. He joined Wax Records in 2017, and that November the six-song EP Boy with a Guitar appeared, featuring the Canadian hit “Born to Love.”
