Biography
Sylvia Striplin supplied vocals to Aquarian Dream on the jazz-funk/disco outfit’s second album and remained until the ensemble disbanded in the early 1980s. Her next affiliation was with Roy Ayers and the Uno Melodic label; in addition to participating in Ayers’s short-lived Eighties Ladies venture—which issued just one record, Ladies of the ’80s, on Uno Melodic in 1980—she also issued solo work that drew substantial assistance from the jazz-funk legend. Uno Melodic put out an excellent single in 1980 that paired “Give Me Your Love” on the A-side with “You Can’t Turn Me Away.” Roughly twelve months later a follow-up album appeared. Although Striplin never reached mainstream audiences, her sweet voice remains immediately familiar to dedicated listeners of jazzy R&B and to the participants in England’s early-’90s “rare groove” movement.
