Biography
Formed in 1964 at the Prague Conservatory, the Talich Quartet adopted its name from Václav Talich, founder and conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. Jan Talich Sr. served as the ensemble’s original first violinist and belonged to the conductor’s lineage; the post later passed to another descendant, Jan Talich Jr. The remaining founding members were second violinist Jan Kvapil, violist Jiří Najnar, and cellist Evžen Rattay. Although more than a dozen musicians have belonged to the group across the decades, it has retained a stable interpretive identity. In the early 2020s its personnel comprised Talich Jr., Roman Patočka, Radim Sedmidubský, and Michal Kaňka.
Long regarded as one of Eastern Europe’s most enduring chamber ensembles, the quartet concentrates on Czech repertoire by Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Leoš Janáček, and Bohuslav Martinů while also devoting substantial attention on disc to Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. International recognition arrived early despite the travel constraints imposed during the Communist years; the players reached Paris in 1975 and made their North American debut in 1987. After the collapse of Communist governments they began touring Europe, Japan, and North America nearly every year and have since extended their itinerary to the Middle East, Australia, and Indonesia.
Initial sessions appeared on Czech labels, yet the quartet soon signed with the French imprint Calliope and completed thirty recordings for that company by 1988. Its catalogue, which embraces both Czech and Russian composers and has collected numerous major awards, also encompasses extensive surveys of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert; a Beethoven cycle first taped for Calliope was reissued by Harmonia Mundi in 2000. The ensemble appears regularly at European festivals, among them the Casals Festival in France, the Prague Spring Music Festival, and the Europalia Arts Festival in Brussels. It remained with Calliope until 2008, after which it moved to La Dolce Volta while continuing to record occasionally for other labels. In 2022 the quartet issued a new account of Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 (“American”).
