Kevin Martin and Justin Broadrick, whose shared history includes projects such as God and Ice, form the duo Techno Animal. The group crafts beat-driven ambient music that merges dub-style production with dense, subtly unsettling melodic lines and heavily processed electronic rhythms. Although Martin continues with God and Broadrick maintains Godflesh plus Final, Techno Animal stands as their most sharply defined and effective vehicle for electronics-centered work. The debut full-length Ghosts appeared on Martin’s Pathological label in 1994, after which the double-CD Re-Entry came out on Virgin. In 1996 the pair joined Blue Angel, a Rising High subsidiary, and issued Techno Animal Versus Reality two years later. They maintain close ties to other post-industrial dub and dark ambient figures including Mick Harris of Napalm Death and Scorn as well as Bill Laswell via Automaton and Silent Recoil. Like those artists, both Broadrick and Martin have pursued an extensive range of recordings that extend from monochrome ambient through death metal, industrial, and experimental jazz. Broadrick also works as a club DJ while Martin serves as a music journalist and critic, writing the liner notes for the noted Macro Dub Infection compilation and contributing regularly to The Wire and Alternative Press. The duo recorded the split-LP Symbiotics with Porter Ricks in 1999. They signed with Matador the following year and released The Brotherhood of the Bomb in 2001.
