Biography
Known for his vibrant personality and stature as one of jazz’s most influential producers ever, Teddy Reig participated in numerous landmark recording sessions throughout the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. He began his production career in 1945 and quickly became a regular presence at Savoy, overseeing many of the label’s key dates—including those featuring Charlie Parker—and thereby helping elevate Savoy into a leading force in both jazz and R&B. In 1950 Reig established the Roost imprint; by the middle of the decade he had moved to Roulette, where he documented the Count Basie Orchestra along with additional jazz instrumentalists and vocalists on an extensive scale. An astute discoverer of talent, Reig exerted significant influence across jazz as well as the R&B and Latin music fields. Medical issues prompted his withdrawal from the industry during the 1970s.
